What's it like for my dog?

Your dog will enjoy off-leash time to run, fetch, chase, sniff, and swim. They will be with other Roots dogs that I personally know and trust.

I believe it's very important for dogs to have the freedom to choose their activities and when they do them. As such, I engage with my dogs but don't force a rigid structure on them. This is their time to play, explore, and just be themselves out in nature.

We'll go for hikes, playgroups at fields, and swimming parties in the hotter weather. I facilitate the fun, and make sure everyone has a satisfying time whether that be playing fetch, play-wrestling with other dogs (or me!) or simply exploring the interesting smells of nature.

How many dogs are there per group?

I take between three to five dogs at a time. This varies based on factors like:
Each dog's level of energy
How outgoing each dog is
Which location we're headed to
If any dog has special needs

Do you work Weekends and Holidays?

Non-major holidays, yes, if it falls on a weekday. If I do plan to take a holiday off I will give advanced notice.

Weekends, no, but if you have an emergency and need coverage I will do what I can.

Does my dog have to be well trained?

If your dog isn't used to being off leash then you can sign up for the Mentor Hike option. I'll work with them on things like recall and attentiveness on a long leash until you and I both deem that they're ready for the real deal.

If your dog is already used to being off leash, but maybe needs a bit of "tuning up" on their listening that's totally normal. I work with all my dogs regardless of their level of training to make sure everyone is safe and happy.

Will my dog come back dirty?

Sometimes, but within reason. Your dog may have some dirt or dried mud on their paws and legs, and if they like to roll in the dirt it may be other places too.

I do what I can to towel off my dogs before dropoff, and even do a quick bath with shampoo if it's particularly bad.
I won't drop off your dogs looking like swamp monsters, but there may be signs that they've been out and about in nature.

My dog has a pattern of getting into fights. Can they still join a group?

I don't take dogs with aggression or reactivity issues for off-leash outings even if the issue is only toward certain types of dogs or in certain scenarios. Since I can't closely control the environment for off-leash outings, it becomes too much of a risk.

If you are unsure how to handle your dog's behavior and don't know where to turn, get in touch. I will help you find a program or trainer.
